Quality of Care in Culturally Diverse Populations
Needs Assessment Summary
African Americans and Hispanics receive fewer vaccinations, receive less therapy for pain, are prescribed fewer antidepressants, and get fewer antiretroviral drugs for HIV/AIDS than Non-Hispanic Caucasians. African American and Caucasian patients differ significantly in response to beta blockers and other treatments for hypertension. Folk religion and healing rituals can be powerful, especially with the newly immigrated. Healthcare providers need to become aware of these cultural and racial disparities.
