The Impact of Reimbursement Strategies for Atypical Antipsychotics in Medicaid
Needs Assessment:
Pending Healthcare reform has motivated both the pharmaceutical industry and CMS to focus on more efficient reimbursement of technology that provides value to patients. This is of particular interest in the area of antipsychotics due to the vulnerable nature of thepatient population and the significant cost differences between the typical vs. atypical antipsychotics. An extensive review of the current literature in this area reveals the controversy between cost and effectiveness. Whereas some articles report on various restrictions to reimbursement of the atypical antipsychotics through prior authorization and other means, other groups report on the unintended consequences of these restrictions to patients. Therefore a debate among experts representing both perspectives is needed to provide insight into the experiences of others to improve future approaches.
Learning Objectives:
Following completion of this program, participants will be able to:
To understand the mechanism of action of the typical and atypical antipsychotic drugs to understand their potential difference in efficacy and side effects in treating patients with schizophrenia.
To describe the current restrictions policies that have bee put in place by Medicaid and other insurance agencies to limit access to the atypical antipsychotics to certain patient populations
To review the potential consequences of restricted access to patients with schizophrenia.
To participate in the debate of balancing access, cost and outcomes to improve patient care in schizophrenia.
