Biosketch

Dr. Teresa Shireman

Dr. Shireman is a pharmacoepidemiologist and health economist with over ten years of experience in working with administrative claims data.  From 1997-1999, she directed the Ohio Medicaid drug utilization review program and oversaw several health services research projects examining medication use and its impact on outcomes.  Dr. Shireman has held several state contracts with Kansas Medicaid (2000-present).  In particular, she has published numerous studies of health care services and medication use in elderly and disabled Medicaid beneficiaries.  Projects have linked prescription claims with inpatient and outpatient services and nursing home claims to identify major medical and mental health comorbidities and procedures for model adjustment, outcomes, costs, and quality of care.  Dr. Shireman has extensive knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of working with administrative claims data and risk adjustment strategies as well as important caveats to Medicaid-based health services research.  She is interested in improving the quality of care delivered to Medicaid beneficiaries.
